Northern Lights Clubhouse
A Community for Connection and Wellbeing
Northern Lights Clubhouse
Founded in 2011, the Northern Lights Clubhouse provides a home for people to gather and connect, now finally in a permanent WBD owned facility, the Northern Light House & Program Center.
The Northern Lights Clubhouse (NLC) is an inclusive space for people seeking connection and community. Clubhouse especially welcomes those with the mental health challenges posed by limited income, loneliness, neurodivergence or substance abuse recovery.
Clubhouse provides meaningful connection. Whether it is book club, morning coffee, homemade NLC Lunches or one of the many enriching activities on the NLC calendar, you will find a welcoming, caring community.
To be a part of Clubhouse, we suggest coming for lunch. Our Wednesday lunches are homemade by Clubhouse Program Director and talented chef, Robyn Bertlesen and crew.
Joining for lunch is easy and anyone can just show up. You are also welcome to sign up as a guest, so we know you are coming and we can make sure to welcome you. To join as a guest for lunch for click
In addition to sharing a healthy, yummy, homemade meal together each week, members collaborate on creating a schedule together of things to do together. Check out the calendar below to get an idea of what you can join in on if you become a member

Being a member means community and connection, and the Clubhouse model is an inclusive one, where staff and members work side by side to make decisions on day-to-day operations of clubhouse.

How it works
Clubhouse creates social connections by providing a welcoming space and structure for people to come together and engage in the day-to-day tasks of cooking, reading, creating laughing and contemplating.
People are social creatures by nature. Our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and community members are important to our survival.
Stable and supportive relationships give us the support we need to cope with stressful life challenges.
People with healthy relationships are more likely to make healthy choices that lead to better mental and physical health.
Social connections give us:
- Emotional support: people we can turn to during good times and hard times.
- Physical support:
- A ride to the doctor or grocery store.
- Help with childcare on short notice.
About Northern Lights Clubhouse
Serving Ely with Community and Connection for over 15 years
Northern Lights Clubhouse History
The NLC was founded in 2011, by local health care professionals, in response to a community need for more than traditional health care could provide. The Clubhouse founders knew that people in Ely needed connection and community to thrive.
Clubhouse International
The Northern Lights Clubhouse has its foundation in Clubhouse International (CHI). CHI is a global organization dedicated to social and economic inclusion. CHI is a non-profit organization that helps start and grow Clubhouses globally where people with mental illness can go to get their lives back. Every day, Clubhouses around the world are helping people living with mental illness to reclaim their futures and provide a supportive, recovery-focused community that they can be a part of. The NLC works with Minnesota’s Clubhouse Coalition, has attended Clubhouse accreditation training and continues to pursue accreditation pathways.
